Welcome

Are you are looking for a counsellor because you’re not feeling your usual self , don’t know why, and are struggling to cope with your everyday life?  Do you feel the need to find the underlying cause of your issues or need some help managing your behaviour? Then I’m sure I can help.

My name is Caroline Abbey. I an experienced, qualified, insured and BACP registered counsellor/psychotherapist. I have been working  for more than 14 years in  a number of different settings , including private practice , NHS Primary Care, women’s domestic violence support , and counselling young people and students.

I am a down to earth northern lass which hopefully means that my clients find it easy to trust me and talk honestly even at the beginning or our work together (see my testimonials)

I am a very compassionate and non-judgemental counsellor and committed to helping my clients feel more valued and accepted , but I am equally challenging when needed.

I offer affordable counselling in the heart of Manchester as well as  Westhoughton (near Bolton),  and/or on-line,  and can tailor different types of  therapy to match your individual needs.

Typically the changes you want to make could be achieved in 6-8 weeks at a time and day that suits you. Why not email me or leave a message on this site and we can arrange a free telephone or on-line consultation to see if we can work together?

FAQs

What Type of Counselling do I offer?

I am a Person-Centred Therapist , which is a type of Counselling or Talking Therapy. The focus is primarily on feelings, with the theory that changing the way you feel changes the way you think and therefore behave More About My Approach.

I also use elements of other approaches e.g. Transactional Analysis and Compassion Focused Therapy to help you to improve your overall mental health.

What should you expect from the sessions?

Talking Therapy isn’t fixed programme as with other approaches (e.g. CBT). It does depend on what you bring to the sessions, what pace you want to work at , and what comes up as part of the our exploration. However, that doesn’t mean that the process will be slow , or that you will have to do all the talking . While I obviously will provide a safe space for you to discuss your issues, I will challenge you to question your unhelpful beliefs about yourself. While the focus will mainly be on your present concerns, we may have to delve into your past life and relationships to see what impact these things have had on your feelings.

How Long and Frequent are Sessions?

Sessions are usually an hour and we would normally start off weekly. Fortnightly is also very common. It is up to you though, there is no set pattern

What commitment is required from you?

To keep up the pace and flow of our work together , you need to be committed to attend a number of sessions at reasonably regular intervals. In-between sessions, you won’t be given homework to do , but you may be given reading materials and you will need to set aside time to consider what was discussed. It may also help you to keep a diary detailing anything that has come up for you.

How do you know if the counselling is working?

In general you should start to feel more at ease , less burdened and more empowered within a few weeks. We will review our work at regular intervals, to check how you feel it is going

How much does the counselling cost and how is it paid?

The fees are £60 per hour for On-Line or Westhoughton and £70 per hour for Manchester. Paid by Bank Transfer
